In June of 2009, a rare total solar eclipse blanketed certain portions of the planet in total darkness. Czech photographer Miloslav Druckmüller traveled to the middle of the Pacific ocean to the Marshall Islands to capture the incredible event.

To create the photos above, he compiled over 40 images shot from two different cameras.

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room.

One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs.

His bed was next to the room’s only window.

The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.

The men talked for hours on end.

They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation..

Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake.
Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.

As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by.

Although the other man could not hear the band - he could see it in his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days, weeks and months passed.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep.

She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.
He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides the bed.

It faced a blank wall.

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window.

The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.

She said, ‘Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.’

Epilogue:

There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations.
Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled.
If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can’t buy.
‘Today is a gift, that is why it is called The Present .’

I actually enjoyed the movie, The Host. Just a tidbit of what I thought.

I do understand why there were some people who didn’t enjoy it or were disappointed by it. Watching the trailer, I was ready for a lot of action with romance on the side.
Honestly though, it was like romance with a side of action. But I don’t think it took away from the movie. I enjoyed it because of the message and the little things.
I think a lot of people were hoping for a ton of action and explosions and stuff. and there would be hot guys and a weird kind of ‘love box’ romance.

So I looked at a few movie reviews and stuff. And most people thought that the movie was disappointing and the acting wasn’t that great. A lot of reviews said that Saoirse Ronan did not act that well and that her expressions were all dull and lacked emotion.
Although I do see that in the movie, it didn’t bother me much. Because if you think about it, she was Wanda most of the time we saw her. Wanda. Is. The. Alien. And they have never inhabited a HUMAN body until now. Everything is strange. I’m sure being in a new body is uncomfortable and you can’t really harness all the emotions that are available to you. And her expressions were different between her two characters, Melanie and Wanda. If you think about it, she had fun, and she showed emotion when she was Melanie in the flashbacks. You saw her smile and look as relaxed. She was confused and scared when they came to get them at her dad’s place. I liked that Wanda didn’t show that much emotion, it just shows that there will be many more emotions that she will discover.
The characters were very different, though it was still only one person playing both of them. I could see the difference. And you could hear the difference in their speech. Melanie, you could hear all the force and that she wouldn’t give up. With Wanda, she was soft and you could tell she didn’t like to hurt people.

It did not hurt that there were hot guys and hot cars. Might I say, I have a slight obsession now with Max Irons. And I have definitely seen a few of Saoirse’s movies; she is amazing. And she is so young. The cars, the cars! SO NICE.

And I am glad that I read the book after. Because it was pretty different as well. I read the Harry Potter books before the movies (obviously), and sometimes it’s unnerving that what you imagine is not what you see in front of you in the movie. So, I was very upset when I imagined this whole world and the movie was not exactly as I imagined. But just because you watch a movie, does not mean it will/will not affect what you read after.
There were some scenes in The Host that were the same as in the film and I could take from that. But if there was a description that wasn’t in the film, I could imagine it myself and it would not affect what I think of the movie overall.

It’s true though. The books are always better than their movie partners.

So, overall, it was a pretty good movie.
Movie- 8.9/10
Book- 9.2/10

And I have to add, I don’t like how the interviewers asked what’s the difference between The Host and Twilight. I remember watching an interview with Max Irons and he said that The Host is a step up from Twilight. In a way, it is. But they are two extremely different books. But, the writing is a bit better in The Host.
